Semmering Region

Our Hotel lies central but still in a quiet corner directly at the foot of the Magic Mountain, near the base station of the gondola, in just a few minutes you are on the piste! From the piste you can ski our very own downhill directly back to the Hotel. Our house also lies on the trekking/walking paths on the Hirschenkogel and Sonnnwendstein.

 

Semmeringbahn

This is, to the present day, still in full operation and was the first full gauge mountain train track in Europe. Due to the extreme difficult terrain and the altitude differences covered, it can probably be called the first mountain rail system in the world! The architect, Carl Ritter von Ghega, used the newest technology of his time to enable these inclines and extreme corners.

 

 

 

Ghega´s Semmering track covers a length of 41 km with an altitude difference of 460m. It was built between 1848 and 1854 and includes 14 tunnels; the Scheitel tunnel is 1431 m long). There are also 16 viaducts, some of which have 2 levels, and over 100 arched stone bridges as well as 11 small iron bridges. 60% of the stretch has an incline of 20-25%.

 

 

The stretch is curved almost its full length, whereby 16% has the narrowest possible radius of 190m. At the same time supporting walls, control points and rail stations were built using the material extracted while digging the tunnels.

In 1998 the Semmeringbahn was declared a World Cultural Heritage treasure by UNESCO. The reasoning was that this was such a technical achievement solving great physical and construction problems to the highest standards.

 

Maria Schutz Church

The world famous Pilgrimage Church Maria Schutz was built in stages between the 13th and 15th century. It lies in the heart of the Semmering region and invites to reflect and pray. Many pilgrims over the centuries swear this experience strengthened them and helped them. Church tours through the baroque architecture are possible.

Chapel of the holy Family

The initiative for the erection of the chapel, finished in 1895, came from the Countess Zichy, born Princess Metternich. The romantic little chapel on the Semmering, neat Hotel Panhans is built in the new gothic style. Services are read on Tuesday and Friday at 16:00 o´clock and Saturday at 18:00 o´clock and Sunday at 10:00 o´clock in the Pius Hall.

Sonnwendstein Church

This mountain chapel was built in 1935 from the Austrian "Work services" and after severe damage during the World War 2 renovated in 1956, further work was carried out in 1976. The precious colored glass windows are from Prof. Koller, a "Semmeringer". The key to the chapel can be obtained from the mountain station of the Sonnwendstein Lift, which is also open in summer.
